Low hourly paid college kids, salaried employees with little regard for your property or privacy. This doesn't mean all computer repair professionals are "bad". On the contrary, most of the independent ones are very good.  As a consumer you must look at who is actually doing the work. The clean cut and attractive mid-30 spokesperson in the commercial isn't the one who will repair your computer. 

 Look past the advertising hype of the big box stores who advertise computer support. Look beyond the TV screen and instead, look behind the counter and take notice of the young mid-teen / 20-ish kids who are making not much more than minimum wage. These are the "professionals" you are entrusting your personal property and data to.  

Computer repair shops are much like any other business, and in tough economic times like any other business they are even more inclined to cut cost, hire cheaper labor, and avoid spending more money on technicians that know what they are doing. Even at some of the biggest names in consumer electronics and tech support, behind the counter you will nearly always see young kids with little to no real world experience, let alone degrees in I.T. related fields, repairing computers. 

If you computer is like my own (I live on mine), then you know that all the data contained on your hard drive is private to you. It's your work, your interest, even your "life". Leaving your data in the hands of immature teenagers who are low-paid and have little regard for your personal privacy is out of the question.
