It's important to seek professional help as soon as possible when you discover your data has been formatted. Under most circumstances the chance of complete recovery is good, as long as the hard drive or device is not used, and data is not "written" to the new file system.

No Geek Explanation: When you format a storage device (Hard Drive, SD Media Card, etc..) the operating system deletes the data and marks the file system as "free space". Your data is still there, however that room is now ready to be re-used as a new file system. As data is written to the new file system, the old data (your data) is over-written.

This is why it's so important that you follow a few simple steps to ensure a successful recovery.

Stop using the storage device. If the device that has been formatted is an external hard drive, unplug it from the computer immediately and unplug it's power source. If you accidentally formatted a SD Media card (from a digital camera or video camcorder) turn off the device. If the hard drive is installed in your desktop PC you should not write data the formatted hard drive. It's best if you shut down the computer to avoid accidentally writing new data to the device.
